There are some other visa options available that allow foreign nationals to enter the United States. Generally, foreign nationals may come to the United States in one of the two basic categories described below:

Permanent Residency Visas ("Green Card")

Permanent Resident status is symbolized to many people by the so-called "green card." Besides through an employment- or family-based visa petition, foreign nationals can obtain immigrant status through the green card lottery program.

There are many types of nonimmigrant visas. Depending on the type of visa, an individual may enter the United States to attend school, obtain specialized training, or vacation.
